halloween Barcelona 2017Four programs exist for which coursework is aligned directly to our curricular needs and for which there are pre-approved ourses: Spain, you can choose among Barcelona, Granada, and Bilbao. Latin America, San Joaquín de Flores, Costa Rica. 

Advising: The LAS-SP program in Barcelona is advised by the Spanish advisor, Ms Tasha Robles. Spanish majors and minors participating in the other programs listed here are advised in academic matters by Ms. Tasha Robles, and for all other matters students should contact Illinois Abroad and Global Exchange (Ms. Claire Bryan) and LAS (Mr. Kelly White).

Departmental scholarships for study abroad are available.

Other study abroad programs in Spanish-speaking countries are not evaluated directly by Spanish faculty and therefore credit is not guaranteed.

A. SPAIN

Minimum GPA 2.5 (3 preferred)

Core curriculum includes courses in culture, history, art history, law, literature and linguistics

Students must have completed Spanish 141 (or equivalent) prior to start of program

Students with no prior knowledge of Spanish can attend the summer Business program

Based in the University of Deusto

Core courses in culture, business, politics and gastronomy

B. LATIN AMERICA

SAO Instituto, San JoaquÍn de Flores (Costa Rica)

Costa Rica

Students must have completed Spanish 141 (or equivalent) prior to start of program

Fall, spring and summer options

Based in the town of San Joaquín de Flores

Core courses in culture, literature, environmental studies

Live with a family to soak up the language and the culture.

 

OTHER PROGRAMS

The Quito, Ecuador program has been put on hold for SP18, FA18, and AY18-19 terms. If you are primarily interested in studying abroad in Ecuador, please review our program with the University of Minnesota:

LANGUAGE ASSESSMENTS

The Spanish department is unable to offer language assessments for students who are not declared Spanish majors or minors and/or who are studying abroad in programs we do not supervise directly. If Spanish evaluations are needed for programs other than LAS Barcelona, Deusto, Costa Rica or Granada, please contact the sponsoring department and College directly.

Exception: IPENG programs’ students (Engineering students) and Fullbright applicants can contact Dr. Pilar Martínez-Quiroga at pquiroga@illinois.edu.

Be aware that all petitions will be processed within 3-6 working days from the moment they are received. Please plan accordingly. The Department of Spanish and Portuguese does not have the staff to accommodate urgent requests.
