Major/Minor Requirements

The Department of Spanish, Italian, & Portuguese offers three programs of study at the undergraduate level for Spanish:  Spanish Major, Teaching of Spanish Major (BAT), Spanish Minor.

Spanish major

Students interested in the Spanish major can combine the major with many other disciplines.  See the program for coursework on the link above.  Students are encouraged to volunteer, plan internships, and study abroad for the major--see links to the right.

General Education requirements

Teaching of Spanish (BAT)

Students interested in Spanish teaching should see the Spanish advisor as soon as possible to plan coursework.  Students are coded as interested in this program and officially apply in February of the sophomore year.  The program is very competitive, accepting only about 17 Spanish majors each year.  Applicants with a stellar gpa, references, varied volunteer experience with youth in Spanish, and an outstanding, mature, and thoughtful essay will be accepted. See the program of coursework on the link above.

Other sites of interest are:

SPANISH MINOR

To pursue a Spanish minor, you need 18 hrs of specific coursework beyond the 100-level in Spanish. Find the minor program on the link above. Although minors do not have priority into classes, the revision of the undergraduate curriculum has greatly increased accessibility to required courses and to choices at the advanced level. You will want to attend a minor information meeting before declaring the minor. See current schedule on main advising page. Powerpoint describing the minor.

If you are in or have completed Span 200, 204 and 228 you should register your intent of a Spanish minor with the Spanish Department. While this still does not give you priority into Spanish classes, it does put your name on the email listserv for Spanish majors and minors so that you will be updated on the most current information for Spanish majors and minors. See link below to download the form you will need to bring to my walk-in hours. If you have not attended a minor information meeting, allow about 20-30 minutes for advising.
